Chapter 199: The Creeping Green Terror

It was late on the night before Halloween. Fritz and his friends, Doojer and Brynn the Elf, were walking home from a party at the Marquis De Sod’s.

Brynn teased the Gnomes, ‘It’s on this night that The Creeping Green Terror lurks in these woods. It has no face, arms, or legs. It’s just a shapeless green mass of goo that waits to devour unwary Wee folk.’

‘I don’t believe such a thing exists,’ Doojer replied, ‘You’re just trying to scare us.’

*

‘I think that thing is real’, said Fritz in a very serious tone, ‘in fact, it’s lurking on the path straight ahead of us.’ They all stopped and observed the horrible green thing as it oozed slowly toward them.

‘What do we do now?’ Brynn asked.

*

‘We can’t go back,’ Doojer said, ‘it’s too far to the edge of the wood that way.’

‘We’ll have to go off of the path through the trees and go around it.’ Fritz suggested.

At that moment, the creature spotted them and it crawled faster. The friends ran off the path into the trees.

*

They burst back onto the path ahead of the thing and kept running. It changed direction and gave chase.

‘There’s an old abandoned house up ahead,’ shouted the Elf, ‘if we can get inside without it seeing us, we can hide there till it goes away!’ They ran harder and put more distance between them and the monster.

*

They came to the house and ran inside, closing the door behind them. They waited quietly and tried to catch their breath. But the monster knew they were inside and it hit the side of the house, making it shake. Then it began to bubble through the broken windows.

Fritz said, ‘We have to get out before it engulfs the whole house! Quick, the back door!’

*

They ran out as the creature covered the little house. ‘Running water!’ Brynn shouted. ‘We have to find running water!’

Fritz agreed, ‘Yes, most creepy unnatural things can’t cross running water.’

‘There’s the stream at the edge of the woods,’ added Doojer, ‘it’s our only hope!’

*

The hideous thing followed right behind them as they ran for the edge of the wood. It was gaining on them and making a horrible squishy noise.

‘There’s the stream!’ cried the Elf.

*

Fritz, Brynn and Doojer dashed out of the woods and through the little stream. The thing oozed to the edge of the water and just stood there. The three reached the other side and saw the monster trying to find a way to cross.

*

Finally, the terrible thing gave up and slithered back into the woods. Fritz and his friends gave sighs of relief.

‘Well,’ said Fritz, ‘that was quite a Halloween scare. I think we’d all feel better after a good stiff drink.’ The others agreed. ‘Let’s go to Hobb’s End and open a nice bottle of brandy.’
